Lacunae
The Latin word "Lacuna" means "an unfilled space or interval," or "a gap." The works in "Lacunae" are a series of oil paintings made in Winter 2016 focusing on the elements of nature, predominately winter-themed interpretations of icicles. My study of icicles helped the fill both the gaps in between snow trips and proved to be a fascinating inspection of the space between light and transparent solid ice form. As I further pursued this series, I found sources of inspiration in other natural elements such as cornfields, tree bark, and caves. The forms and shapes created organically by nature through which the light passes push how the meaning of an image can alter through repetition and layering media. The process lends itself to my painterly abstraction style and goes beyond recognition of physical object into a metaphysical surface that moves backwards in space.
On view at the West Chop Inn, 162 Iroquois Ave, Vineyard Haven, MA for June 2016.
